  • Art club meets once a month with a new project each month. Meetings are typically from 3:00-4:30pm after school

The Central students continue to serve our community in the following ways:

  • Food drives for WHIP

  • Salvation Army adopt a family

  • Student helpers for teachers and staff

  • Donations to Coats for Kids

  • Donations of school supplies for schools in need

  • Contributions to the memorial funds for students who lost a parent or sibling.

  • Community Day

  • Pet supply drive for TAPS

The Central Care Club is continually working to implement new ideas to continue serving our community.

Chess Club

Chess Club

  • Open to 6th- 8th grade students.

  • Chess club meets every Thursday (other than holidays) from October through mid-March. Some extra practices may be on Tuesdays in October and November for beginning players.

  • The club will represent CIS at several regional tournaments (usually on Saturdays) and take our best players from each grade level to the State Tournament in February.

  • Both individual awards and team awards are available at all tournament

E Sports

  • The eSports program is open to 5th through 8th grade students.

  • Students should have some video gaming experience to join the team, but don’t need to have played Rocket League before

  • Depending on turnout, players may only be allowed to attend on days when they have a scheduled match.

  • Students can form their own teams of 3-4, and all players without a group will be randomly assigned a team based on experience level.

  • Parents will need to arrange transportation home from school after the activity.


Knit for a Cause

Knitting

  • Open to any 6th-8th graders, no try-out or previous experience is required.

  • Students will have opportunities to knit projects: to donate to charities, for themselves, to give to teachers/parents/etc., and more.

  • Students will be able to loan most supplies from the school including knitting needles, sewing needles, yarn, stuffing, and more.

  • There might be a few projects where students need to provide their own yarn, because learning how to shop for and pick out your own yarn is part of learning how to knit.


Math Team/Math Counts

  • The city math team consists of ten 7th graders and ten 8th graders chosen by the 7th and 8th math teachers based on data collected throughout the school year. 

  • These students participate in a city wide math competition in the month of May.

Speech Team

  • Open to any 5th-8th graders, no try-out or previous experience is required.

  • Website

  • For speech, students pick to perform a script in front of an audience.  Students can pick from the following types of performances: solo, duet, small group, impromptu, or team improv.

  • All students will go to IESA State Speech finals to perform their script. 

Student Council

  • Student Council is an organization assisting with activities at CIS and its surrounding community. Students who are members of student council will have the opportunity to do a variety of community service activities, help organize and plan school dances and various fundraisers, and run assemblies. 

  • Student Council tryouts are held in May for incoming 7th and 8th graders. Students have the option of writing a one page essay, one page brag sheet, or submitting a video of why they would be a good candidate and ideas they have for District 51. Students will also ask one current teacher fill out a leadership for them regarding classroom behavior, leadership amongst peers etc. Student council meets every other week during the school day.

  • Students will receive a pin or letter if first school activity.


Yearbook

  • Open to 7th-8th grade students.

  • Website

  • Students are provided with the opportunity to take yearbook pictures and assist in designing the pages of the yearbook. We discuss the use of backgrounds to enhance, but not distract from the overall look of the page.

  • Students also learn how to add accents, such as clipart, to the page and how to adjust the color of the image to coordinate with the background. In addition, they help to promote yearbook sales by hanging posters and distributing yearbook information to classrooms.
