Central School District 51 to Host Groundbreaking Ceremony

Washington, IL— Central School District #51 will host a Groundbreaking Ceremony on Thursday, June 6 at 6 p.m. to mark the start of construction for an addition and district facility improvements. The groundbreaking will be held behind Central Intermediate School’s Holford Gymnasium. The public is invited to attend. 

Construction will kick off this summer, and work will be phased so students can continue to utilize the space during construction. Portions of renovated and addition spaces will become available throughout the project, with completion of work slated for start of school fall of 2020. The expansion will allow for advancement in the District’s science, technology, engineering, math, art and foreign language programs.

"This is an exciting time for the Central District 51 community. We have spent the last four years working with the community and staff to plan for this expansion and renovation with the goal of meeting the needs of our growing enrollment," Central School District 51 Superintendent Dale Heidbreder said. "We are eager to see this project come to fruition and look forward to providing more 21st Century learning opportunities to our students."

 The newly connected elementary and intermediate schools will feature:

- Connection of two existing buildings via two newly constructed additions
- 18,765 sf Band/Choir Art, and Primary Gym Addition
- 18,870 sf 3rd & 4th Grade Addition
- Expanded and updated student media commons at both CPS & CIS
- Expansion of dining commons capacities at both CPS & CIS 
- Relocation of district & building administration at CIS including new secured entry
   sequence
- Various renovation throughout CPS & CIS to create updated & expanded learning
  spaces
- Expansion of classroom spaces to provide age appropriate learning spaces for all
  students

Many community nights were held to elicit feedback from the public, and we are confident the final building project will reflect the input that was received.”
